These Basketball 50ps are struck in cupronickel alloy to standard Fifty Pence piece specifications (weight: 8.00 grams, diameter: 27.30 millimetres). Like all coins in the Olympic 50p collection, the obverse shows Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. The reverse of the 2011 Basketball 50p shows Sarah Payne's design, which consists of four basketball players in various stages of play, the 2012 Summer Olympics logo above and '50 PENCE' below, with the entire background being Basketball textured. As an Olympic event, Basketball deputed at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, and at the 2012 Summer Olympics hosted in London both gold medals were won by the USA Teams. Her aim was to capture the movement of the game in her design and used the texture of a basketball in the background to ensure basketball was the obvious subject without needing the word 'basketball'. Sarah Payne, a card and toy designer, submitted the winning basketball design. ![]() The collection featured 29 different designs on Fifty Pence pieces, selected from 30,000 designs submitted by the public.
